Vitamin D

Table of contents

You measure vitamin D through 25-hydroxyvitamin D, or 25(OH)D, the main circulating form and the best indicator of your overall vitamin D stores. Most labs consider 30 to 50 ng/mL adequate, with levels below 20 ng/mL signaling deficiency.

What vitamin D measures

The 25(OH)D test reflects vitamin D from both sun exposure and diet or supplements combined into a single value. Because this form stays in your blood for weeks, it gives a stable picture of your status rather than a daily snapshot. Your body converts it to the active hormone that helps you absorb calcium and maintain bone strength.

What high or low levels mean

Low levels usually come from limited sun exposure, low dietary intake, darker skin, obesity, or conditions that impair fat absorption. Deficiency can weaken bones over time, contributing to softening (osteomalacia), reduced bone density, and muscle weakness or aches. In children, severe deficiency causes rickets.

High levels almost always trace back to excessive supplementation rather than sun or food, since your skin self-regulates. Values above 100 ng/mL raise the risk of hypercalcemia, which can cause nausea, kidney stones, and confusion. Follow up with a clinician if your result falls below 20 ng/mL or climbs above 50, especially alongside abnormal calcium or bone symptoms.

Vitamin D FAQ

What is a dangerously low vitamin D level?

A result below 12 ng/mL is generally considered severe deficiency and warrants prompt attention. At this level you face higher risk of bone loss, muscle weakness, and, in children, rickets, so most clinicians recommend supplementation and retesting.

How long does it take to raise vitamin D levels?

With consistent supplementation, most people see meaningful improvement in 2 to 3 months, since 25(OH)D turns over slowly. Your dose, baseline level, body weight, and absorption all affect the pace, so retesting after about 8 to 12 weeks is common.

Can you have too much vitamin D from the sun?

No, your skin naturally limits how much vitamin D it produces, so sun exposure alone does not cause toxicity. Excess levels come from high-dose supplements, which is why routine testing matters if you take large amounts.
